Scaravelli-inspired drop-in Hatha Yoga
classes with Penny
Tuesdays, 6pm - 7pm @ Cornerstone Community Centre, Hove
To effectively combat stress, we need to activate the body’s natural relaxation response. Finding ways to fit yoga and other related relaxation techniques into your life can help reduce everyday stress and boost your energy and mood. They’ll also help you to stay calm in the face of life’s unexpected events.
These drop-in classes contain some free flowing combinations of Asanas (the practice of postures), along with warm ups and gentle investigation into key areas of the body and breath to gain more insight into the postures of an Integral Hatha practice. Classes are usually themed and explore selected components of an overall Yoga practice- Pranayama (breath), Mantra (sound), Meditation (quiet focus), Yoga Nidra (lead conscious relaxation), Mudras (gesture of the hands). Participants are encouraged to honour their own human differences no matter what their age or level of expertise.
Gently bringing together traditional teachings and evolving practices of yoga, Penny's classes are suitable for complete beginners as well as those who wish to build on their current practice. The approach of the class is gentle and considerate, but the overall experience is intense and deep. Includes movement, traditional yoga postures, breath, relaxation and sound.
This series of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) sessions are suitable for beginners as well as for anyone wishing to practice and extend their existing mindfulness skills. .
with Dr Trudi Edginton
Our world is a very stressful place and although we cannot get rid of stress completely - it is an intrinsic part of our lives -, we can learn to cope with it and to alleviate some of the acute physical symptoms of stress (the 'fight or flight' reaction) by focusing our attention on the place of inner calm using Mindfulness and meditation.
With over 5000 scientific publications evaluating the effectiveness of mindfulness based approaches to stress reduction and therapy, this approach based on Eastern traditions is rapidly becoming embraced by the Western psychological and medical communities. The Hove StressBusters Mindfulness programme is run by Dr Trudi Edginton, a Senior Lecturer in Cognitive Neuroscience at Westminster University and a qualified Mindfulness Instructor. Trudi's approach to teaching mindfulness is based on extensive understanding of human brain and cognition, and she has recently published a number of studies exploring the cognitive and emotional mechanisms that underlie the effectiveness of mindfulness meditation.
Studies have shown that people who practice mindfulness meditation are better able to relax, and have more control of their emotions. Meditation has been found to lower the levels of our stress hormone cortisol and to increase production of serotonin, the brain chemical which helps balance our mood and behaviour.
